About Doctor Gatens

Doctor Gatens completed both his undergraduate studies and dental degree at The Ohio State University, graduating from the dental school in 1979.  After practicing as an associate dentist in the Northern Virginia area, he opened his private practice at Fair Oaks in 1984.  Doctor Gatens is an active member of the American Dental Association and the Northern Virginia Dental Society.

Doctor Gatens is trained in all general dentistry procedures, including routine and preventive treatments (such as cleanings, fillings, root canals, extractions, crowns & bridges, and dentures) and newer techniques, such as enamel bonding and dental sealants for children.  Enamel bonding allows the doctor to restore color, size, and shape to teeth for a more pleasing appearance.  A sealant is a plastic material applied to teeth to prevent decay.  Doctor Gatens treats the entire family.  He believes a child's first visit to the dentist should be at age 3 to help build a lifetime of good dental habits.
